Fashion first for phones

Tech-savvy people are using today's newest multifunction mobile phones to boost their personal image as much as to make use of hi-tech functions such as being able to keep up to date on stocks, sports and the latest news.

A July street survey of 305 "smartphone" users found that 25.9 percent purchased a smartphone because "it looked good and fits their personal style."

But the remaining 74.1 percent bought the phones hoping to increase their work efficiency and to take advantage of the different features available.

"Smartphones offer internet access and multimedia functions," said Hong Kong University marketing professor Bennett Yim Chi-kin.

The study was conducted by the Poon Kam Kai Institute of Management and Research In Motion, developer of the popular BlackBerry smartphone.

On the "smart" features, 83 percent said using them have changed their personal lifestyle. Popular functions include using the phone calendar to book personal events, checking news, weather, sports and stock prices and showing digital photos to family and friends.
