千變萬化的英語動詞(二)

猶記得初見 take 時,它總是跟 bring 走在一起,當時老師要我們分辨哪個解「拿去別人處」,哪個解「拿回自己處」,試問完全沒方向感的栗子妹,又豈會弄得清?所以我對 take 這個字實在沒甚麼好感。
run 一樣,作動詞用的 take,其搭配和解法同樣千變萬化:
1. The rebels succeeded in taking the town. (叛軍攻佔了城鎮。)
2. I take The Economist. (訂閱《經濟學人》。)
3. She took drugs at college. (她上大學時吸毒)
4. I wish you'd take me seriously. (我希望你認真對待我的話)
5. The wound may take a long time to heal. (傷口可能需要長時間才能癒合。)
6. The bus can take 60 passengers. (巴士可以60名乘客。)
7. John took a dislike to Mary. (約翰對瑪莉產生反感) [譯作「約翰討厭瑪莉」更佳,謝慧行先生提供翻譯!]
8. He took a train to France . (坐火車到法國。)
9. The organization wants to take a survey on people's views towards drug addicts. (機構想進行調查,看看人們對吸毒者的看法。)
10. The skin graft failed to take. (表皮移植未能成功)
看看以上十句,要解釋可能並不難,但要翻譯得好,還是需要一點技巧吧?

  4. I don't know about #2, I personally won't use take for the meaning " 訂閱"
[版主回覆06/11/2009 08:24:00]Kilo Kel: I didn't know it before. I just copied the entry from the dictionary.
But I think the sentence makes sense, right?

  5. How about "He doesn't have what it takes" ( 佢功夫未到家) ?  Well, maybe it's kind of close to #5.
[版主回覆06/11/2009 08:27:00]Wow, Teacher. If you hadn't provided a translation, I wouldn't have known how to translate your example. So, thanks!
BTW, I think the sense is different from #5.

  6. I am surprised that as a film producer, you forgot "Act 4, Scene 7, take 2".
[版主回覆06/11/2009 08:23:00]I'm not a film producer la, Teacher
Isn't 'take' a noun in your example?
And may I ask you a question? I'm not sure about 慧行爺爺's translation is accurate. Could you advise?
    --> I wish you'd take me seriously. 我希望你重視我。
Somehow, I think 'take me seriously' is not the same as 重視

  7. 栗子妹:講到翻譯,唔駛問阿貴,栗子妹譯出來的一定好  但愚見認為“ I wish you 'd take me seriously . ( 我希望你 認真對待我的話 。 ) ”和“ John took a dislike to Mary. ( 約翰對瑪莉 產生反感 。 ) ”如果分別譯成『我希望你會重視我』和『約翰討厭瑪莉』是否會較為簡單直接好呢?

  8. Chestnut, both Gramdpa Wai and you are coreect on "not taking someone seriously".  Yours is the original, and his is an extrapolation.  Imagine someone who continuously does not  認真對待我的話 ,I could say that he does not 重視  me.

Nowadays, many English speakers consider the two meanings to be separate and distinct.
[版主回覆06/11/2009 19:03:00]Thanks a lot for the explanation, Teacher!
I would consider the two meanings to be separate and distinct unless the context can provide enough information for the extrapolation.

  9. Ooooh!  Good catch, Chestnut.  I never thought of "take 2" as a noun, but you're right.  It has to be.

  10. Here's a few more:

John took Mary to dinner. (John paid for the dinner)

John was taken by the swindler for $10,000. (John was cheated out of $10k)

John took Tom in a fight.  (John defeated Tom)

[版主回覆06/11/2009 19:03:00]Teacher: You're so sweet! Thanks for the examples!

  11. 9. The organization wants to take a survey on people's views towards drug addicts. ( 機構想 進行調查 ,看看人們對吸毒者的看法。 )
Was this example sentence taken from a dictionary, as Oxford Collocations Dictionary says〝take a survey〞 means 〝take part in a survey〞 in the US?  Let me check further.
