蕭樹倫說:There's only one way not to learn English well – by not studying it at all。

#1 is a no-brainer, absolutely.
2 I do it backward. If I really like the film, I buy the book.
#3 not sure.
#4 yes, it helps.
#5 If I were a principal, I'd decree that all students be allowed to use an English-English dictionary during all English exams. For upper secondary, I'd even decree that all exams be openbook and opennotes, in addition to open dictionary. There's just too damn much destructive rote learning in HK.
05/13/2008 10:38:00]Dear Teach:
What do you mean by #1? Do you mean to get zero mark or to read a lot of books and magazines?
For #2, I do the same as you. However, I don't have time to read novels for the time being
For #5, you and Mr Fong hold the same opinion!
An E-E dictionary is beneficial to students, but it is hard to persuade them to use one (You know, they don't even use an E-C dictionary nowadays. They just go for the online dictionaries or the dictionary in their mobile phones.)

“A man, A pan, A man and a pan”。
Chestnut: sorry about my loose American idioms. A "no-brainer" implies it's obviously true. So what I meant on #1 is that reading lots of books and magazine is an obvious way to improve English.
I like Mr Fung, from I understand of his writing. He's a learned man. Too bad he writes exclusively in Chinese.
Hey, Grandpa Wai Hung is my contemporary. He went to primary school the same time I did with that Oxford English text.
