與小學老師談英文

朋友 A 在小學教英文，有空時栗便會找她切磋一下。

這天，我們談到疑問句 (Wh- question)。A 說，若要學生回答時間，如 eight o'clock、half past nine 等，應用 what time 而不是 when。栗當然不同意，因為查 OALD，when 字的第一個解釋便是 at what time，怎麼不能用 when 來問呢？

於是朋友便解釋道，因為用 when 字問，答案可以是日期，如 3rd May，或是星期，如 Sunday。為免學生混亂，便用 what time。

唔，這個理由好一點，但記得千萬別說用 when 字是錯的喔！

另一天，我和 A 各自拿著一包紙包飲品，邊喝邊聊天。A 問我，「一包檸檬茶」的英文，是 a carton of lemon tea，還是 a box of lemon tea？我隨口便說是 a carton of，但 A 卻跟我辯說是 a box of。我倆爭辯不下，最後跑了去問啞老師。

據 OALD 的解釋，carton 是 a plastic box for holding goods, especially food or liquid，而 box 則是 a container used especially for holding solid things。[按：請參閱 The Teacher 的留言補充。]
